Since we bought our Vintage Argosy Trailer (many many years ago!), the “gaucho” aka sofa aka couch aka extra bed has always been a decor challenge. Since the gaucho is at the entrance of our trailer, it sets the decor and design.

When we bought it, the couch was a fairly ugly green with weird flowers fabric.

I immediately thought of doing a 70’s theme since the trailer was made in 1977. I found a super groovy Tahari quilt with wild colors of electric green and blue. That lasted a couple of months before my guys deemed it almost as ugly as the old granny green and flower fabric.

Next came a major change in our Argosy’s entire decor: beige and tan. The easiest way to cover up that ugly granny green and flower fabric was to tuck in a tan quilt to make it look decent. The problem was that a teenager and dogs always found ways to untuck it and make it look too messy.

Realizing that the gaucho was seriously uncomfortable, we added a feather bed to the top and then threw a quilt around it. Well, in theory this sounds great but it was a complete disaster. Children of our friends went camping with us and decided to use the couch as a “slide” since the feather bed kept slipping, dragging and falling off.

It became quite evident that avoiding the ugly granny green and flower fabric on the gaucho was no longer working. The only way to get rid of it was… to actually get rid of it. Without any references except the ugly green fabric, we undertook upholstering the gaucho ourselves. After having bland beige quilts over the gaucho, I found a trendy fabric from Joann’s to update our Argosy living room.

Doing the upholstery ourselves was quite easy. This fabric held up and really updated our small gaucho BUT everytime I do something trendy, I find myself craving simple fabrics. So, after a year, I am redoing the inside decor of our Argosy for more clean lines, less trendy and more simple color scheme. The simple color scheme allows me to change out the accessories for different seasons.

In the picture below are the color samples on top of our Ikea Countertop. The all grey fabric will be used on the gaucho. The buffalo print will be curtains in the back bedroom. The faux leather will be accents through out the trailer.
