In our family, the twin beds bring along the typical “Ricky and Lucy” jokes. When we bought our Argosy, we bought it for the back twin beds. Argosy’s that have the rear bedroom, have the coveted rear panorama windows. They are not as common and not a lot of these rare trailers remain.
Converting Twins to King can happen with any Twin Beds in Airstreams. Some have Twins in the Middle, others in the Back. This works for all of the layouts!
We have lived with the Twins for six years before deciding to convert them into a King. In theory, this seemed like a no brainer idea. But, in reality, this singular project’s outcome caused such meltdowns that it almost caused us to cancel a camping trip.
Pros:
- Huge Big Bed that can fit two humans + four terriers
- Added Memory Foam makes this bed like a cloud
- Big space to stretch out
Cons:
- Can’t make bed easily
- Not easy to get or out of
- Takes up 1/4 of trailer
- Fuse Box is directly under it
- Not easy to find storage for extra bed foam/blankets to breakdown during the day
At first, I just knew that I would breakdown the King bed, destroy it and never ever consider it again. BUT, as with every change made with a Vintage Trailer renovation, you have to live with the change for a while. Take a couple of camping trips with the change to see if you truly love or hate it. I have wasted hundreds of dollars on quick change outs that I should have thought out better or camped with first.
Here’s what we did:
1. We bought 4″ of a full sized memory foam to line up with the space between our two twin beds. (Unfortunately, the 4″ we bought only bulked up to 3.5″ so we had to buy an extra inch of memory foam.)
We cut the memory foam into two pieces so that they would stack on top of each other during installation.
2. We bought 4 Yards of generic fabric to sew a slipcover. We also bought two 7′ Zippers for easy removal. Sewed slipcovers and inserted the memory foam.
2. Buy a 3/8″ plywood board to fit the space in between and about 2″ under each side of both twin beds. Cut to size. Cut to 66″ long and 24″ wide.
We probably should have stained, painted or fancied up this plain board but no one will ever see it.
Insert the board under the twin beds.
3. Stack the slipcovered memory foam on top of the board.
The twins have now been converted to a massive King bed. The middle part is 24″. Ours is approximately 7′ wide and 6’3′ deep.
